A brief intro to Reiki ...

This page offers a brief intro to Reiki, and a pointer to the service we can offer.  The website was created on 8th November 2001, and it is likely to evolve continually  from this point to encompass, gradually, more and more information on Reiki, and some of the other 'Complementary' services we're going to be able to offer in the future.

For now, let's just have a brief look at Reiki - what it is, and what it isn't ...

(For more detailed information, you might wish to look at some of the external links.)

What Reiki is:

Reiki is a hands-on complementary therapy which aids relaxation, healing, and stress-busting. How does it do this? It taps into the Universal Life-Force Energy (the Japanese meaning of the words rei/ki - pronounced ray-key). This energy flows through all living things, and is alternatively known as Prana (Hindu), or Chi (Chinese) - and has many other names in many different cultures. Reiki enhances the body's natural ability to heal itself. It is an uncomplicated system which can be learned by anyone, requiring no more than an attunement by a Reiki Master and the intention to use it in a given situation.

What it isn't:

Reiki is not a religion - nor is it allied to any religion. It is practiced by people of all religions, or none. It doesn't depend on any particular belief system. It is neither a meditation technique, nor form of hypnotism.

A standard Reiki treatment will last about an hour - but you should allow up to two hours, for a pre-chat, and an after-chat, and time to 'come-to', particularly if you have to drive afterwards.

You should find it a very relaxing and soothing experience - so important in today's stressful lifestyle.

When undergoing a Reiki treatment you will normally be lying down (though this is not absolutely necessary), you will be fully clothed, and you will be in a room with candles and soft music. The treatment will consist in the Reiki practitioner gently laying their hands on about 12 positions on your body, for about 5 minutes at each position, normally working from head to toe. This is not a massage, and the practitioner's hands do not move once they're established at each position. You may well sleep after about the first 10 minutes.

What will you feel? - This varies so much - from person to person, from one hands-on position to the next, and from one treatment to the next. The practitioner has no control over where the Reiki energy will go - whether to the mental, spiritual, emotional, or physical level of the person being treated. Reiki is said to have its own intelligence. It somehow knows where it is needed most on any given occasion. So - you might feel a burning sensation from the practitioner's hands at one position, and a really freezing sensation at the next. At others you might feel neutral, or you might sense a tingling. All these are normal sensations. Equally, the practitioner feels a variety of sensations, and has no idea in advance what these will be. However, these sensations all relate to the energy flow which is being 'called forward' by the recipient.

One important point - Reiki is an absolutely benign and harmless energy. It can be used alongside any other complementary therapy, or standard medical treatment. There are one or two (and only one or two) minor precautions which the practitioner will wish to clarify before offering a Reiki treatment.

At the end of the treatment you will be very gently roused from your daydream state, and invited to sit up in your own time. You'll be offered a glass of water, and advised to drink plenty more during the rest of that day. We'll then have a brief chat about how you're feeling, and then you'll be able to leave when you feel ready. It's possible that your body might begin a detoxification process for a day or two after each treatment, but this is something we can discuss at a treatment session.

So what does it cost? - A standard treatment for relaxation or stress-busting is:
£25

For people who have a condition which prompts them to seek a series of Reiki treatments we will negotiate individual arrangements. It is generally accepted by Reiki practitioners that to receive Reiki energy is the right of every living creature on this planet, and for this reason no-one need feel that if they lack the resources they cannot come to a practitioner for treatment.
